World of Sea Battle drops you into a huge open archipelago with a small ship, a little gold and no clear idea of what to do. It's a free-to-play sailing MMO with more than fifty ship types, a player-driven economy and open-sea PvP, and it launched in Early Access on Steam in October 2025. It's also easy to lose your first ship in your first hour.
This guide covers the decisions that matter most in your first week.
Choose Your Server Carefully
One server means one character, and there are no transfers. Pick the region closest to you (Europe or North America) and, ideally, the one your friends play on. Changing your mind later means starting from scratch.
Start from a Safe Port
Ports aren't equal. Wealthy central ports attract experienced players, higher fees and more griefing. As a beginner, base yourself in quieter starter ports such as:
- Brandport
- Freedom Bay
- Freebooter Bay
- Santa Maria
- St. John
Ports also differ in which ships they can build. Ship tiers run from 7 (weakest) to 1 (strongest), and each port lists the tier range its shipyard supports. Before you settle anywhere, check that the port can build the next ship you're aiming for.
Making Your First Gold
There are three main ways to earn early:
- Missions: the most consistent income. Peaceful, combat and trade-route missions pay steadily with limited risk. Start here.
- Manual trading: buying cheap in one port and selling high in another. It's slow and takes research, but it's safe once you find a route that works.
- Combat: potentially the most lucrative, but repairs and losses add up quickly. Only fight when you can comfortably afford to fix or replace your ship.
A common beginner mistake is sailing a valuable ship far from home to chase a better market. Remote, wealthy ports can leave you stranded with high fees. Keep a small, fast reserve ship for errands and resource runs, and save your main ship for jobs that need it.
Combat Basics: Know Your Ammo
Broadsides win fights, but ammo choice decides them:
- Heavy cannonballs: general hull damage, your default.
- Burning balls: set the enemy on fire for damage over time.
- Chain shot: shreds sails and slows the target. Use it to catch a runner or escape a chaser.
- Birdshot: kills crew at close range. Essential before boarding.
- Flaming kegs: area denial, dropped behind you to discourage pursuit.
Keep the wind in mind. Your speed and turning depend on your angle to it, and an enemy upwind of you controls the engagement.
Boarding: Taking Ships Instead of Sinking Them
Boarding is where World of Sea Battle gets interesting, and where the best rewards are. Pull alongside an enemy and press Space repeatedly to trigger the boarding prompt. Fights largely come down to crew numbers: the side with more sailors usually wins.
A reliable beginner pattern is "burn, then birdshot":
- Wear the target down to around half health with burning balls and regular shot.
- Switch to birdshot at close range to cut their crew.
- Board once your crew clearly outnumbers theirs.
A successful boarding lets you loot cargo, take hostages or capture the ship outright. Captured NPC ships can be ordered to follow you through the command menu (Z, then "Follow Me").
First Upgrades Worth Buying
When you have spare gold, these improvements pay off quickly:
- Crow's Nest: extended vision, so you see threats and prizes earlier.
- Large Cellars: more cargo space and less food spoilage on longer voyages.
- Copper Plating: extra armour for the fights you can't avoid.
- Extra Sails: better speed, which is the best defence a trader has.
Upgrades from grade 2 upwards usually offer much better value than grade 1, so it's often worth saving for them.
Final Tips
- Join a guild early. Escorts, shared knowledge and protection make the open sea far less hostile.
- Don't carry what you can't afford to lose. Bank profits in port before heading out again.
- Learn one ship well before collecting several.
