Ragnarok Online has been running for more than two decades, and its job system is still the first wall new players hit. Every character starts as a Novice. After reaching job level 10 and learning Basic Skill, you pick one of six first jobs. That choice decides your next hundreds of hours, because each first job branches into specific second, transcendent, third and, on servers that have them, fourth jobs.
This guide skips the theorycrafting rabbit hole. It covers what each first job feels like, where it leads and who it's for.
How the Job System Works
The ladder is easy to follow once you see it laid out:
- Novice → first job at job level 10
- First job → second job (two choices per first job)
- Rebirth at base level 99 / job level 50 → transcendent version of your class
- Third job, and on updated servers a fourth job
You also put points into six stats: STR, AGI, VIT, INT, DEX and LUK. Your build matters as much as your class. An AGI Knight and a VIT Knight are almost different characters. Pick a class first, then follow one proven build for it rather than improvising.
One practical note: many official regions run Renewal servers with modern mechanics and third or fourth jobs, while some also offer Classic (pre-Renewal) servers that stop at transcendent classes. Check which one your friends play before you commit.
The Six First Jobs
Swordman: the reliable frontliner
High HP and simple melee skills. Swordman branches into Knight (big damage, Peco Peco mount, later Rune Knight) or Crusader (holy tank and party protector, later Royal Guard).
Pick it if: you want a forgiving start, solid solo levelling and a clear role in parties. It's the safest first character in the game.
Mage: big damage, paper armour
Mages hit hard with elemental spells but die fast when monsters reach them. They branch into Wizard (huge area spells, later Warlock) or Sage (utility, elemental tricks, later Sorcerer).
Pick it if: you like positioning and wiping groups of monsters. Expect a slow, fragile start before area spells come online.
Archer: the best solo class for beginners
Ranged physical damage driven by DEX, with an easy learning curve. Archer branches into Hunter (traps and a falcon, later Ranger) or Bard/Dancer (performance-based support, later Minstrel/Wanderer).
Pick it if: you want to level comfortably on your own. Killing from range while monsters walk toward you hides a lot of mistakes.
Acolyte: the class every party wants
Healing, buffs and holy damage. Acolyte becomes Priest (the iconic healer, later Arch Bishop) or Monk (a combo-based melee fighter, later Sura).
Pick it if: you enjoy group content. A good Priest never waits long for a party. Solo levelling as a support build is slow, though, so many players level a battle-oriented build first.
Merchant: money and utility
Merchants can open vending shops, buy cheaper and sell higher. They branch into Blacksmith (forging, later Mechanic) or Alchemist (potions and a Homunculus companion, later Genetic).
Pick it if: you care about the economy, or want a second character that funds your main. A Merchant is a common alt for exactly that reason.
Thief: speed, dodge and critical hits
Fast attacks, high flee and poison tricks. Thief becomes Assassin (burst damage and Katars, later Guillotine Cross) or Rogue (skill copying and stripping enemy gear, later Shadow Chaser).
Pick it if: you want a fast, aggressive playstyle and don't mind learning when not to fight. Thieves can feel fragile early.
Expanded Classes
Outside the six main paths, Ragnarok Online also has expanded classes. These are worth knowing about, but they're not ideal as a first character:
- Taekwon → Star Gladiator or Soul Linker
- Ninja → Kagerou / Oboro
- Gunslinger → Rebellion
- Super Novice, which keeps the Novice look but learns first-job skills from every path
- Summoner (Doram), the cat race. It has an easy start, but its progression works differently from humans.
These classes usually reward game knowledge you don't have yet. Doram is the exception: it's beginner-friendly, just different from the human paths.
Which First Job Should You Pick?
| You want to… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Level solo with minimal stress | Archer |
| Tank and survive mistakes | Swordman |
| Be in demand for parties | Acolyte |
| Delete groups of monsters | Mage |
| Make zeny | Merchant |
| Play fast and aggressive | Thief |
For most new players, Archer or Swordman is the right call. Both level smoothly on their own and both stay useful at endgame. Once you understand stats, gear and maps, a second character as Acolyte or Merchant pays off quickly.
Tips for Your First Week
- Follow the Novice training grounds. They give free gear and teach the interface.
- Don't reset stats on impulse. Look up a build for your target class before spending points. Depending on your server, resets can be limited or cost real resources.
- Join a guild early. RO is built around groups, and veterans will happily point you to good levelling maps.
- Watch your weight limit. Going over 50% weight stops natural HP/SP regeneration, which catches nearly every newcomer.
