Rise of Kingdoms looks like a simple city builder for the first hour. Then the beginner shield wears off, a neighbour with ten times your power shows up, and the real game begins. The first month decides whether your account grows into something useful or stalls.

This guide focuses on the decisions that make the biggest difference.

Step 1: Pick a Civilization (Don't Overthink It)

Your civilization gives small passive bonuses, a starting commander and a unique unit. You can change it later with a Civilization Change item, so this isn't a permanent decision.

Good beginner choices by goal:

  • Development-focused: China (building speed, starts with Sun Tzu) is a classic early pick. Your first weeks are mostly construction and research.
  • Balanced: Britain (archer-focused, starts with Boudica) handles both barbarians and early fights well.
  • Defensive / infantry: Rome (infantry defence, starts with Scipio Africanus) is sturdy and simple.
  • Combat later on: Germany, France, Arabia, the Ottomans and the Vikings shine once you're fighting regularly. Many players switch to one of these before their first KvK.
  • Newer civilizations like the Maya add their own mixes of combat and gathering bonuses. They're worth reading about once you understand the basics.

Pick the one you'll enjoy now, then switch when your goals change.

Step 2: City Hall Is Everything

Almost every building is capped by your City Hall level. Your priority in the first weeks:

  1. Upgrade City Hall whenever possible.
  2. Upgrade only the buildings that block the next City Hall level.
  3. Keep both builder queues busy at all times. An idle builder is wasted progress.
  4. Prioritise the Academy (research) and Farms/Lumber Mills only as far as you need them. Gathering from the map is far more efficient than relying on city production.

Research economy technology first (gathering speed, building speed, troop capacity), then military. Early on, faster growth beats a slightly stronger army.

Step 3: Level the Right Commanders

Commanders lead your armies and gain experience from battles, especially against barbarians. Early on:

  • Level your starting commander and Boudica or Sun Tzu (whichever you have) for barbarian farming.
  • Pair them with an epic commander as secondary to share experience and fill out skill bonuses.
  • Don't spread sculptures across many commanders. Sculptures upgrade skills, and they're scarce. Focus on one or two main commanders until they're strong.
  • Ignore the temptation to unlock every legendary you see. One fully built commander pair is worth more than five half-built ones.

Step 4: Join an Active Alliance Immediately

In Rise of Kingdoms, an alliance isn't optional:

  • Members tap help on your buildings and research, cutting real time off every timer.
  • Alliance territory gives gathering bonuses and safer resource nodes.
  • Gifts, alliance technology and rallies on barbarian forts all speed up your growth.
  • An alliance that defends its members makes you a much less attractive target.

Look for an alliance with lots of recent activity, flags on the map and players near your power level. A large but inactive alliance isn't worth much.

Step 5: Survive When Your Shield Drops

New governors get beginner protection for a limited time. When it ends, you're exposed. To avoid being farmed:

  • Keep resources below your Storehouse protection when you're offline. Spend them on upgrades before logging off.
  • Use peace shields before long breaks once you're bigger than the beginner range.
  • Move your city into alliance territory, close to stronger members.
  • Don't attack players far stronger than you. Retaliation can wipe out weeks of troops.

Events and Free Resources

Rise of Kingdoms is generous with events: daily login rewards, "Mightiest Governor" style competitions, barbarian hunts and seasonal campaigns. Check the events tab every day. Many of them give speedups, commander heads and sculptures you'd otherwise only get by spending.

Save speedups for events that reward using them. Burning them on an ordinary upgrade wastes points you could have earned.

Your First KvK

Kingdom vs Kingdom (KvK) is where Rise of Kingdoms becomes a full-scale war game. You don't need to be a top player to contribute:

  • Follow your alliance's calls, gathering and rallying where you're told.
  • Protect your troops. Losing them hurts much more than missing one fight.
  • Treat your first KvK as a learning season. The rewards are a bonus.
